The Dumbbell Nebula (M27) is one of the brightest and most famous planetary nebulae visible from Earth. Located in the constellation Vulpecula at a distance of about 1,360 light years, it was formed when a dying star shed its outer layers into space. Discovered by Charles Messier in 1764, it was the first planetary nebula ever recorded.
